So i was given the task of better understanding "searching" on the internet. and given that i do not use anything but google i found myself typing in google "search engines". the irony of searching for another search engine on google made me laugh. but i found that for basic searching google, bing, altavista, dogpile, etc. are all more or less the same. the only difference was the visuals. i personally preferred bing and google the most. however i found a delightfully fun search source: Idee Labs.
I usually use google just because i think that the user interface is simple and visually apealing. however, after trying it out a little i actually prefer Bing for image searching. i found that the most useful tool on bing was that as i was looking at the search result website on the left side it actually kept my search results visual on the left side of the page making it easy to go from site to site without having to use the back button. very convienient.
then there is ask.com. it is better if you are looking to answer a question. it is still not as excellent at answering a specific question as it makes you feel. but good nonetheless.
then as i said my big surprise search engine is Idea Labs. it allows you to look for images on the web using color, tags, or your own pictures. i could have played with it for hours. i highly recommend this site for anyone who does a lot of image searching. especially if you are an artist of sorts. the search by color option was really cool. you can pick up to ten colors and it will show you a ton of pictures that have those colors. some amazing results. Go play have fun.
